The "dead reef" look is mostly due to water absorbing light. This affects the colors you see underwater.Differant colors of the Spectrum are absorbed at different depths depending on the wavelength of the color. Low frequency reds are absorbed first-High frequency Blues and Violet last. While the reefs of the Lower Keys are far from pristine, this video has some nice examples of Keys DIVIN!
