There was a People's Court case a couple of years ago where a man brought a 16-year-old boy to court, claiming he had purchased an iPod from the boy on eBay and received nothing but a box stuffed with newspapers. The kid was a shameless jerk who had scammed several other people too, and the judge exploded at him, screaming, "Who do you think you are?" and telling him she was going to notify law enforcement. Not quite as entertaining as the Judge Judy scammer case, but pretty close.

Personally I like Judge Milian. Judge Judy IS more fun to watch but Judge Milian definitely has her moments, and I'd bring a case before Judge Milian before I'd bring it before Judge Judy (much as I love to watch Judy's abrasiveness I would not want any of it directed at me).

Yeah, but $5K is a drop in the bucket when you think that advertisers are paying the bulk of it through sponsorships of the show. Despite what some might think, these shows (lame as they are) DO draw high ratings for their time slot, and sponsors like all kinds of demographics (for daytime TV, it's typically stay at home parents or work from home). Remember, these shows likely make millions, plus the TV station pays to air it, too. Syndication is still big bucks (no whammys!).

I'm surprised that they'd pay even the larger judgments - i've seen some that are up to $5000, like in the case of that Ebay scammer on Judge Judy. Thanks for the info DIESEL!

You sign a release (I've never seen one, this is from what I was told from a rep of the show on the phone) that states you will abide by the decision of the court. Court shows actively scan suits in local small claims court to see what looks interesting (I never called the show, they found my case in court documents). Technically, you're not paid by the person you sue, you're paid by the show, but if you have a good argument and know how to push the buttons of the opponent, it's all good.

Well, this from memory, since my ex-roomie declined to appear (dumb on his part, but he likely knew I could push his buttons and didn't want to make an ass of himself on TV, but in non-TV small claims court, the court makes judgments, but does not enforce them. In TV court, win or lose, you are paid an appearance fee (don't recall how much), and if you win, the show pays you the money. So, you don't have to collect from the loser, he owes nothing to you, the show pays all fees (cont'd)

I've always wanted to know the details. Do they pay ALL of what you're owed? And do they pay it for the defendant? Tell us all about it, please! :-)
