In some areas, including the one where I reside, there is no law that states HVAC units refrigerant has to be reclaimed, it is merely released into the air unlike vehicle systems, which must be reclaimed.I've seen HVAC techs just jet the freon into the air; is that what you do harleydude? So he is in actuality being honorable in reclaiming used refrigerant, which can be filtered and reused. Why would you prosecute for that?

I learned what freon smells like. I punctured the coil to my frezer trying to get the anyoing ice off of it with a screw driver. The steam started rolling out and smelled nasty. I had to go and find a new refridgerator.
