I played in a group with Edgar right before I left Philly....for about a year...what a monster learned so much from him...he was 94 at the time.

About 20 minutes ago, on a South Philly corner, I was talking to Edgar Bateman for about an hour and a half. We talked Drumming and Boxing. I am glad to report that Edgar is in "Good" spirits.

wow - what a great little band that was - whew! - thank you - too bad there's not a video of sonny stitt & booker because the album/tape/cd titled Soul People is a great listen.

LOVE Booker Ervin!!! He's in my personal top 5 ALL-TIME favorite tenormen (along with Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane, Ike Quebec, and Stanley Turrentine). I can see why Charles Mingus had him featured as a principal soloist on many of his classic big band recordings during the late-50s/early-60s period. Shame he never got recognized the same way Coltrane and Sonny Rollins did as he was indeed one of their peers and just as influential. Died fairly young, too. Did I mention he was self-taught???
