A video giving a tour of the LHC (underground accelerator) at CERN. Measuring 27km in circumference, it will become the world's largest particle accelerator. The first beams are due for injection mid-June 2008 with the first collisions planned to take place 2 months later. The LHC will become the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator. For more information, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L... http://lhc.web.cern.ch/lhc/

wow never knew that those magnets needed to be THAT cold (under 4K?)
kristalkath (January 1, 1970 at 12:59 am)
They are gonna switch it back on in 2009

The rate at which the galaxies are moving away from each other is not the only evidence for the big bang. The main piece of evidence is the Cosmic microwave background radiation which was mapped by COBE not long ago.Even the composition of the universe matches very well with the big bang theory.

They never 'switched it off', its not a toaster. Every sector (except 3-4) is still at nominal operating conditions, and will remain so until they shut down all of their accelerators for the winter maintenance cycleCollisions at NOMINAL CONDITIONS will begin in spring, as was planned since sometime in early 2007. This accident was not a set-back at all, in fact they are still completely on scheduleThese things are expected, and have occurred in every single new technology we have EVER built

maybe, but if it weren't for the extreme fearmongering that has gone on about the LHC (and in the past every particle accelerator to have ever been put in commission), such 'natural selection' wouldn't have existed. I don't wish the death on anyone, no matter how stupid, and especially when its because that person was misinformed and misguided into their beliefs. I don't expect everyone to understand particle physics, which is why such fear mongering should not exist at all

haha, 'gullible', thats rich. You don't even have the balls to admit when you've made a mistake? Are you a teenager or something?
TomOfTheCosmos (January 1, 1970 at 12:59 am)
Too bad it broke. When were they supposed to switch this thing on again?
docarrotsgrowwild (January 1, 1970 at 12:59 am)
does anybody else think that the big bang is a bit of a quick conclusion to the fact that our part of the cosmos might be expanding?
thalanoth (January 1, 1970 at 12:59 am)
i guess the only thing i can respond to that with is... why would you jokingly make yourself look stupid and ignorant? that doesnt seem like a very funny joke to me, or is my sense of humor just off ...

I'm gonna die...at 90 years old or some...:P seriously, how can people think that this could destroy the universe?in a mexican tv show they said it would create a black hoe that would eat the whole universe!!!!!how can they be so ignorant?they r ollimpicaly igorant :) they don't even know what the Higgs' boson is
